Variables

A variable puts something of each contact into the email: their first name in the greeting, their entity in a line. Each person receives the email with their own value.

VariableWrittenComes from
“First name”{{ first_name }}the contact’s first name
“Last name”{{ last_name }}the contact’s last name
“Entity”{{ entity }}the entity they belong to
“Position”{{ position }}their position in it

Any other name between braces is shown to fix: “Use first name, last name, entity or position.”

  1. In “Edit”, put the cursor where the variable goes.
  2. Press “Insert a variable” and choose it.
  3. Under “Instead, when missing”, write the word to use when the contact has none, for example “there”.
  4. Press “Insert”.

“It goes where the cursor is, with the word to use when the contact has none.”

By hand, write the name between double braces, {{ first_name }}, or add the word after a bar, {{ first_name | there }}. Spaces inside the braces do not matter.

  • With a word after the bar, that word is used: “Hello there,”.
  • Without one, the variable is dropped together with the space before it: “Hello {{ first_name }},” becomes “Hello,”, never “Hello ,”.

“Email” shows both cases. Under “Shown to”, choose yourself, with your own values, or “A contact with no name”.

An exported email works the same way: each variable becomes its word, or is dropped.

Variables go in text: the subject, the preview line, titles, paragraphs, button labels and columns.

They never go in a link. A link that holds braces is shown to fix.

“Email” lists these under “To fix”, and the Panel refuses them at Ready:

  • A name that is not one of the four: “Use first name, last name, entity or position.”
  • Marks of another tool that look like variables, such as *|FNAME|* or %%NAME%%, and a stray {{ or }}: “This looks like a variable but is not one:” followed by the text.

Read Publish and categorise for Ready.

The sender’s name, the postal address and the links to stop receiving it are added by the service, in the language of the email. You never write them, and they need no variable. In trial mode, emails go without the postal address until it is given.
